WINNING WAYS CONTINUE IN WISCONSIN: CARSON MACEDO WHEELS THE ALBAUGH – YOUR ALTERNATIVE #41 TO A DOMINANT WIRE-TO-WIRE VICTORY AT WILMOT RACEWAY TO OPEN THE LARRY HILLERUD MEMORIAL BADGER 40 WEEKEND
WILMOT, WISCONSIN (July 12, 2024) – According to plan, the World of Outlaws race teams stayed in Wisconsin to put on a two-day show at Wilmot Raceway this weekend. After the checkered flag flew at Beaver Dam Raceway on Wednesday night, where Carson Macedo brought the Albaugh – Your Alternative #41 home in fourth place, the teams moved to the southeastern corner of the state to start the weekend on Friday night. On tap was the opening night of the Federated Auto Parts Larry Hillerud Memorial Badger 40. Philip Dietz and the JJR #41 crew were getting accustomed to racing in Wisconsin as they unloaded the car from the trailer and began preparing for a night of entertaining action. This 1/3-mile, semi-banked facility is a fantastic facility. Couple that with a pit area filled with the traveling stars that make up the World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series and you got something to work with to drive up the entertainment value. SLS Promotions and the Wilmot track officials were all working hard to give these speed entertainers a surface where they could put on a memorable show for all of the fans who were willing to spend their hard earned money to see some of the best in the business race. The time had come for these competitors to get down to business with 36 race cars lined up at the back of their trailers. It was race day – World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series style – at Wilmot Raceway!
Each team randomly drew a number at the World of Outlaws Command Center to determine when their driver would go out for two time trial laps in Sea Foam Qualifying. When the final qualifying lineup order was posted, the driver who proudly calls Lemoore, California home would push off eleventh aboard the Albaugh – Your Alternative/All Pro Aluminum Cylinder Heads/Fuel Safe Racing Cells #41 Maxim. After being the fastest car in hot laps, Carson climbed into the speed department of his office and pulled on his K1 Race Gear gloves that would help guide him around the dirt oval. Coming into this night of racing, Bill Balog was at the top of the historical speed charts holding the sprint car track record here at 12.199 seconds, which he established last year on July 8th. Carson was focused on going fast as he continued to inch closer to the front of the line in the staging area. When the race official waved him onto the track he accelerated using the power generated from the Kistler Engines motor. He raced off turn four quickly tracking towards the waving green flag. When he crossed the starting line the second hand began moving briskly on the stopwatch. The talented racer was having fun doing his thing while at speed. He stopped the clock in 12.746 seconds the first time around. Carson was still pedaling the gas trying to make speed during his last lap around Wilmot. Only time would tell how well he performed his duties. He exited off turn four with his eyes wide open as he spied the checkered flag hanging out. Without delay his second lap time of 12.753 seconds popped up on the scoreboard. The better of his two attempts positioned him eighth quick overall on the night in qualifying. When the final driver ended his speed test, Brock Zearfoss in the Moose’s LZ Bar & Grill #3z had earned the Simpson Quick Time Award for the fastest lap of the night at 12.424 seconds.
The timing and scoring gurus quickly went to work compiling the starting lineups for the four heat races. The top two finishers in each of those races would earn coveted spots in the Toyota Dash, with the remaining three finishers from each heat race locking down transfer spots to the feature.
Carson was eager to get started from the outside of the front row in the fourth and final heat race driving the Mesilla Valley Transportation (MVT)/Tarlton and Son/FK Rod Ends #41. He would pull to the outside of Sheboygan Wisconsin’s Scotty Thiel’s #73 in row one. Creed Kemenah, the young emerging star from Alvada, Ohio, was on the inside of row two beside Logan Schuchart. Landon Brooks and Bill Balog were rolling in row three. Christopher Flick and Dave Uttech were in row four with Tischendorf alone in row five for the ten lap speed affair.
The field was neatly aligned side-by-side in the traditional starting formation. That all changed when the front row starters reached the chalk stripe laid down across turn four as all of the calmness turned to high speed chaos in an instant. Using the outside lane to his advantage, Carson Macedo was the first driver into turn one and off turn two with the current IRA series point leader Scotty Thiel and Shark Racing’s Logan Schuchart giving chase down the back chute.
Logan Schuchart moved into the runner-up spot in turn three as Macedo started to show off his speed in the Tarlton and Son #41. Carson was in clean air making speed as his Hoosier Racing Tires were gripping the surface. With each completed lap he grasped a more firm position on the top spot with Schuchart a little over a second behind.
The field of cars were all fast and the laps were counting down quickly. Bill Balog was behind the front two in the running order as he made his way by Thiel into the show position. The flagman soon showed the leader the white flag indicating one lap to go. Carson had built a commanding lead over Logan Schuchart as they raced around Wilmot Raceway one last time. Macedo raced to the heat race victory beating Schuchart to the finish line by 2.524 seconds. Bill Balog came home third followed by Scotty Thiel, with Creed Kemenah securing the fifth and final transfer position out of the heat race.
It is always the goal to earn a spot in the Toyota Dash. Carson has been very successful at making his way into the Dash so far this season with a 75.75% success rate (25 times in 33 opportunities in World of Outlaws competition) this season so far. His number selection when drawing out of the oversized NOS Energy Drink can though hasn’t been stellar, but that is all part of the game. When his paw came out of the can this time he was holding the ‘4’ pill, which meant he would get started from the outside of row two alongside Brady Bacon. The lucky selectors of the night were on the front row – Brock Zearfoss and Buddy Kofoid. Logan Schuchart and David Gravel would join them from their fifth and sixth starting spots with Sheldon Haudenschild and Giovanni Scelzi in row four.
When the green flag came out for these 8 drivers, the dirt was flying. Buddy Kofoid drove the Roth Motorsports/Mobil 1 #83 into the lead with Carson Macedo pressuring Brock Zearfoss for the runner-up position down the backstretch. Macedo seized that spot as he dove low into turn three and passed the Moose’s LZ Bar & Grill #3z. David Gravel was running in the fourth position with Brady Bacon and Logan Schuchart behind him.
Kofoid was out front all alone, but Macedo was starting to close the gap just after the halfway point of the Dash. With two laps to go the Lemoore, California chauffeur had caught up to the Penngrove, California speedster. Carson looks underneath – nothing yet. He peaks again entering the next set of turns – no go. He was persistent and checks it out again, this time almost making the pass, but Kofoid carries his momentum to maintain control of the top spot.
Buddy Kofoid won the Toyota Dash with Carson Macedo coming home second in the Albaugh – Your Alternative #41. Brady Bacon raced home third, David Gravel locked down fourth, with Giovanni Scelzi moving forward to round out the top five. Sheldon Haudenschild, Logan Schuchart, and Brock Zearfoss completed the finishing order.
The 24 car field was set for the $12,000-to-win preliminary night at Wilmot Raceway in the 40-lap Federated Auto Parts Larry Hillerud Memorial Badger 40 feature event. The air horn sounded summoning the race teams to the track. Carson would get the Complete Parts & Equipment Solutions/Team Jack Foundation/Bandy & Associates #41 Maxim started from the second starting spot where he would share the front row with fellow Californian Buddy Kofoid. Brady Bacon and current World of Outlaws point leader David Gravel were behind them in row two for the start of the race.
After the drivers showed their appreciation to the fans during the Stone Country Records/Quartz Hill Records four-wide formation, a longstanding World of Outlaw tradition dating back to 1978, they raced back into their two-by-two starting formation. The stars were pacing slowly in anticipation of seeing the green flag wave to get this thing started.
Off turn four the flagman granted them their wish as Carson Macedo led the field into turn one. After the first lap was officially recorded, Carson was still out in front of the field with Kofoid and Bacon completing the top three. Sheldon Haudenschild had moved into fourth with David Gravel in fifth. Carson had speed and was wheeling the forty-one from out in front of the field during the early stages of the race.
On lap 2, the first race slowdown of the night occurred when Creed Kemenah spun in turn four to bring out the caution flag. Carson was the race leader followed by Kofoid, Bacon, Haudenschild and Scelzi.
The field would come back to the green flag with 38 laps to go with Macedo choosing the top lane for the restart. He used that positioning to his advantage when they went back to green flag racing as he drove back into the lead ahead of the Roth Motorsports #83. He immediately started to put some space between himself and the field.
By lap 10, Carson had caught up to the rear of the field and just began navigating through the slower traffic when the second caution flag was thrown for Matt VanderVere’s #10V who spun right in front of the leader in turn one after hitting the inside safety tire.
Carson again would choose the outside lane to restart with 30 laps to go and would bring the field back up to speed with Kofoid, Bacon, Haudenschild, and Gravel right behind the Albaugh – Your Alternative #41 driver. The green flag was not out long as it was again replaced by the yellow one when Mike Reinke’s #10W was off the pace with his night ending as he headed to the pits.
Side-by-side they would restart again with Carson ripping off the top and diving low into turn one to maintain the lead ahead of Buddy Kofoid. Carson quickly went back to work to build his lead and by lap 18 he had again raced back up to the rear of the field and would have to make his way through the lap traffic.
Carson was doing a great job making his way through the traffic so far, but it was thick enabling Kofoid to start closing the big lead Macedo had previously built. At the halfway point of the race it was Macedo still leading Kofoid with Bacon, Haudenschild, and Gravel all running in the top five.
As the race progressed, Carson continued to do a masterful job working through traffic while maintaining, and even building, his lead. Buddy Kofoid was also doing a terrific job in traffic and sitting in the catbird seat as he watched the leader from the runner-up position. Any mistake and he was looking to capitalize. He closed in on Macedo a little as they reached a gaggle of cars, but Macedo worked his way through first and then just set sail. Lap after lap he would increase the distance between himself and his nearest threat.
With five laps to go, Carson Macedo was leading the race by over five and a half seconds with Buddy Kofoid still trying to find him and track him down. The JJR #41 was dominant on this night though as Carson lapped all the way up to ninth place in the Albaugh – Your Alternative #41 as he collected his third win of the year. He raced across the finish line by 5.972 seconds ahead of Buddy Kofoid with David Gravel rallying back to lock down the third position. Sheldon Haudenschild and Brady Bacon rounded out the top five.
After all of the congratulatory confetti fell to the ground and he hugged his fiancé, Holly Howell, and thanked his JJR #41 crew for all of their hard work, Carson headed to the side of the car to talk with Conner Wade with a smile ripping across his face. He started by stating, “That was ridiculous.” Carson continued, almost in amazement, “My car was unbelievable there, especially when we got to traffic. I knew we were in good shape when we got to traffic just because I could pretty much run wherever I wanted as long as I had clean air on my wings. It would go pretty much everywhere. I could split cars. And you know when you’re good like that it’s going to be tough to get by you.” Still smiling from ear-to-ear Carson ended by pointing out, “Tonight was one of those nights. It was definitely a Philip Dietz race car, just incredible from start to finish.”
Another great run for Carson Macedo and the forty-one! The Albaugh – Your Alternative #41 driver and team will be back at Wilmot Raceway on Saturday night for the finale of the Federated Auto Parts Larry Hillerud Memorial Badger 40. If you can’t be at the track to watch the action, tune into DIRTVision.
