CALIFORNIA CINEMA AT TULARE: THE STARS OF THE WORLD OF OUTLAWS PROVIDE INCREDIBLE ON TRACK ENTERTAINMENT AT THE DENNIS ROTH CLASSIC AS CARSON MACEDO BRINGS HOME A TOP FIVE FINISH IN THE ALBAUGH – YOUR ALTERNATIVE #41
TULARE, CALIFORNIA (September 20, 2025) – After rained washed away racing on Friday night canceling the preliminary night of the Dennis Roth Classic weekend, the race teams were even more amped up and ready to put on a show at Thunderbowl Raceway Saturday night. Carson Macedo and the Jason Johnson Racing (JJR) team had their game faces on and so did everyone else throughout the pit area. After a clean sweep of the night last year to take the win in the inaugural event honoring a long-time car owner as well as a tremendous supporter and ambassador of the sport, the JJR team was looking to compete and turn in another outstanding performance as they tried to defend the top step of the podium at the Third Annual Dennis Roth Classic.

Dennis Roth, along with his wife Teresa, have been fielding sprint cars dating all the way back to 1983 when they debuted the Beef Packers #83 on the California scene. Throughout the years, the ownership duo has attracted some of the most talented drivers in the sport to be behind the wheel of their cars leading to numerous victories across the country. On Saturday night there were 37 race teams on hand to honor Dennis Roth in the race bearing his name as they looked to add their name to the winner’s list and pocket the cool $83,000 up for grabs that goes to the winner. It was time to go racing in Tulare – World of Outlaws style!
When all the pills were drawn and ordered from low to high following the Eloy Gutierrez Pill Draw, the cars in the first group of WEDG High Performance Karts Hot Laps made their way onto the track to get a few laps at speed around Thunderbowl Raceway before attempting their two laps against the clock in Honest Abe Roofing Qualifying. After drawing the ‘9’ pill, Carson would be the fourth driver out on the track in time trials guiding the Tarlton and Son/Complete Parts & Equipment Solutions/Bandy and Associates #41 Maxim. When Mooresville, Indiana’s Zach Hampton in the Bill Rose Racing #6 ended his timed session, it was Carson’s turn out on the track. The Kistler Engines power under the hood awoke as Carson flipped down the shield on his Shifty Illusions custom painted Bell Helmet ready to get to work. As he roared underneath the waving green flag, he knew he was now on the clock. With his elbows up, the Californian was laser focused through the first set of turns flying down thew backstretch. He was balancing the edge of speed with pure insanity entering turn three and exited turn four looking to stop the clock on lap one. When the scoring officials logged his initial lap time it was a good one at 13.288 seconds. Carson was still digging out on the track trying to make more speed. This time when he raced by the flagman waving the checkered flag the clock recorded his performance on lap two in 13.421 seconds. When the last qualifier of the night, Hunter Schuerenberg #55, raced under the checkers to end time trials, the quicker of Carson’s two timed attempts was third quick overall. David Gravel in the Big Game Motorsports hotrod let it all hang out again while he was racing around Thunderbowl Raceway turning a lap in 13.157 seconds to earn the Simpson Quick Time Award.

Each driver’s fastest lap in Honest Abe Roofing Qualifying was used to determine their starting positions in one of the four 8-lap Heat races slated for the night. Based on those results, Carson would get his night started from the pole position on the inside of the front row pacing alongside fellow California Central Valley racer D.J. Netto in the Netto Farms #88N in WIX Filters Heat Race #3. They were surrounded by an impressive and accomplished field with Kerry Madsen in the Tony Stewart Racing (TSR) #15s and Shane Golobic in the Matt Wood Racing/NOS Energy Drink #17W following in row two with and all-Golden State row three featuring Landon Brooks #21L and Tim Kaeding #0. Sheldon Haudenschild #17 and Conner Morrell #28M were side-by-side in row four with Jace Park #17s tagging the rear of the field in row five.
There were only five transfer spots up for grabs in each qualifying race with nine hungry competitors looking to lock one down. The flagman turned the yellow lights off around the track in anticipation of throwing the green flag off turn four. When the front row starters arrived, the green cloth was waving as they kicked up the white chalk dust to start the race. Carson led the field into turn one behind the wheel of the Durst Inc./BR Motorsports/CASM Safety Products #41 and exited turn two in front of Netto and Madsen.
Philip (Dietz), Robby (McQuinn), and Adam (Zimmerman) gave him a MAXIM Racing rocket to drive, and Carson was doing his job out front in clean air. With each completed lap he added a little bit more distance between himself and the entire field. He was in attack mode as he built a sizable lead.
The driver of the Jason Johnson Racing (JJR) #41 would never be contested from start to finish taking the win by 1.424 seconds over D.J. Netto who would join him in the Dash with Shane Golobic coming home third. Kerry Madsen raced across the finish line fourth with Tim Kaeding locking down the fifth and final transfer spot.
When each of the eight pills were drawn out of the oversized NOS Energy Drink can, the starting lineup was set for the 6-lap Toyota Dash at Thunderbowl Raceway. The front row would be made up of Kaleb Montgomery #3 with the Albaugh – Your Alternative #41 of Carson Macedo to the outside on the front row. Spencer Bayston #21 and David Gravel #2 were together in row two with Corey Day #14BC and Michael “Buddy” Kofoid #83 in row three. The drivers in the final row, row four, were Garet Williamson #23 and D.J. Netto #88N. When the green flag waved, polesitter Kaleb Montgomery darted into the early race lead as Carson was immediately immersed in a battle for the runner-up position with Spencer Bayston who was piloting the Tarlton and Son #21. Carson was moved back into the show position with Montgomery and Bayston directly in front of him. Another Californian though was moving in quickly and the next time by Corey Day drove by pushing Macedo back into the fourth position. Kaleb Montgomery was impressive and led wire-to-wire to win the Dash with Spencer Bayston coming home second followed by Day in third, with Macedo, and Gravel rounding out the top five. Buddy Kofoid raced home sixth with Williamson, and Netto completing the finishing order.

The 28 car field of stars, after four drivers elected to use provisional starting spots, was set for the start of the 35-lap 3rd Annual Dennis Roth Classic feature at Thunderbowl Raceway. To get to this point was not easy by any stretch of the imagination for any of them, but there was still quite a bit of heavy lifting and high speed action still ahead for these athletes.
Kaleb Montgomery #3 earned the right to start from the pole position after winning the Toyota Dash. He would be responsible for leading the talented field of drivers up to speed when the green lights illuminated along with outside front row starter Spencer Bayston in the Tarlton and Son black and gold #21. Right behind them in row two was Corey Day #14BC and Carson Macedo in the Albaugh – Your Alternative #41 with David Gravel in the Huset’s Speedway #2 and Michael “Buddy” Kofoid int eh Roth Enterprises #83 in row three. Garet Williamson in the S&S Nationwide #23 and D.J. Netto #88N were in row four with Logan Schuchart #1s and Donny Schatz #W in row five.
With retired sprint car legend Danny Lasoski leading the field, the excitement and anticipation began brimming out of this bullring facility. The twenty eight drivers spread out into the World of Outlaws traditional four-wide salute that has existed since the organization first formed back in 1978 as a tip of their hats (helmets in this case) to all the fans in the stands and those tuning in on DIRTVision. After racing back into their starting spots in arranged rows of two it was time to go racing to honor another legend – Dennis Roth!
Polesitter Kaleb Montgomery was the initial driver to fire leading Corey Day who slipped under Spencer Bayston to take over the runner-up spot on the opening lap. Montgomery led lap one with Carson up on the wheel back in fourth place aboard the Albaugh – Your Alternative/High Performance Lubricants/Walker Performance Filtration #41 Maxim. He was now mired in a high speed battle for position with Buddy Kofoid with Carson strategically was hitting his marks searching for speed.
The first caution of the race came out on the fourth lap when multiple cars spun in turns three and four. The cars involved were Bill Balog #17B, Cory Eliason #45, Sheldon Haudenschild #17, and Landon Brooks #21L after the driver of the forty five got sideways causing the melee.
It would be a double file restart with Kaleb Montgomery and Corey Day together out front with Bayston and Macedo behind in row two. Corey Day made his presence known when they refired taking the race lead with Montgomery sticking with him over the next 8 laps. Spencer Bayston was still running third in front of Carson Macedo and Buddy Kofoid. Sitting just outside the top five though was David Gravel just patiently waiting to drive forward.
On lap 12, Gravel moved into the fourth spot as he raced under Macedo for the position before the second yellow flag was thrown for Gauge Garcia #2X who was off the pace with a flat left rear tire. The restart order up front would be Corey Day, Kaleb Montgomery, Spencer Bayston, David Gravel, and Carson Macedo with Kofoid, Williamson, Schuchart, Schatz, and Golobic behind in positions six through ten.
The green flag was back out briefly before quickly being replaced by the red flag when Garet Williamson and Shane Golobic got together resulting in both the drivers flipping in tandem down the front straightaway just out of turn four with Golobic’s #17W mount getting caught up in the fence.
When the accident scene was cleared, the engines refired with Corey Day leading again out front with Kalen Montgomery right behind. Spencer Bayston raced into third moving by Gravel with Carson running fifth. David Gravel was able to reclaim the show position as he and Spencer Bayston began duking it out over the next two laps. Carson was trying to fend off Kofoid for the last spot in the top five but relinquished it on lap 14.
On lap 18, the red flag was back out. This time it was for Sheldon Haudenschild who got up over the cushion entering turn one and flipped to end his night of competition. They would try to restart the race following the race stoppage, but the yellow flag came back out on the restart as leader Corey Day and runner-up Kaleb Montgomery got into a skirmish off turn two where Day right rear tire contacted Montgomery’s car. Montgomery then got into the rear of Day entering turn three sending his #3 up across the track in turn four where he stopped. Under the yellow, Corey Day headed to the Federated Car Care Work Area, but his night was over after the crew assessed his damage. Race officials elected to make this an “Open Red” so teams could refuel and make minor changes so they could complete the last half of the race.
David Gravel inherited the lead when they realigned with Spencer Bayston, Buddy Kofoid, Carson Macedo, and Donny Schatz lined up behind him. The defending series champion stomped on the gras and was cruising out front with the cars behind him not changing over the next eight laps.
On lap 26, the yellow lights had to be turned on again as Tim Kaeding #0 spun into the infield off turn two. It would be a single file restart with less than 10 laps to go and Gravel accelerated back up to speed. He was able to put some distance between himself and the Tarlton and Son #21 of Bayston.
Spencer Bayston was banging around the high side and making speed though. As Gravel approached slower traffic, Bayston was up on the wheel and flying. He was letting it all hang out. The talented racer closed in tight on the leader and was right with him challenging for the lead with two laps to go. Gravel led by the slimmest of margin when they raced by the white flag. Bayston banged off the wall through turns one and two on the last lap before making a valiant attempt to win the race coming off turn four. Bayston turned under Gravel exiting the last turn and the two drivers crossed the line side-by-side with David Gravel winning the race by a mere 0.021 seconds. What a race! Buddy Kofoid took the last step on the podium with Carson coming home fourth and Donny Schatz completing the top five.
While they always race to win, Carson and the JJR #41 team had another good night of competition and speed at Thunderbowl Raceway coming home with their 36th Top 5 finish (a 56.25% Top 5 success rate) of the season. They will now head back East for next weekend’s action in Ohio.
