CANADIAN HANDSHAKE: THE TEAMS THAT COMPETE WITH THE WORLD OF OUTLAWS ARE WELCOMED BACK AT OHSWEKEN SPEEDWAY TO DISPLAY DIPLOMACY AND TALENTS IN THE FEDERATED AUTO PARTS SHOWDOWN

OHSWEKEN, ONTARIO, CANADA (May 14, 2025) – It has been quite some time since the World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series headed North of the Border to compete in Canada. It was almost eight years ago, but the traveling tour crossed into the neighboring country to race a trio of races starting at Ohsweken Speedway on Wednesday night. This three-eighths mile oval has hosted the WoO tour before with Logan Schuchart picking up the win back on July 17, 2017. Donny Schatz has won four times (2010, 2013, 2014, and 2016), Jason Sides captured three wins here in 2007, 2009, and 2010, Tony Stewart collected back-to-back wins in 2011 and 2012, with Stewart Friesen (2015) and Jason Meyers (2009) both owning one win a piece at the track. There was an impressive field on hand with thirty-nine race teams registered and ready to race at Ohsweken Speedway on the opening night of the Federated Auto Parts Showdown at Ohsweken.

Each team randomly drew a numbered pill in Eloy Gutierrez Pill Draw to determine where they would go out for their two laps during Honest Abe Roofing Qualifying. When that process completed, Carson Macedo would be the fourteenth driver in Flight #1 to create speed around Ohsweken Speedway piloting the Albaugh – Your Alternative/Motor State Distributing/High Performance Lubricants #41. Philip Dietz, Robby McQuinn, and Adam Zimmerman had put a new car together after Williams Grove and tweaked the setup a bit following hot laps trying to have the perfect setup to optimize the performance. Carson sat patiently in the cockpit of his Maxim Racing machine. When D.J. Christie #5 completed his time trial session, it was Carson’s turn to go out for his solo speed show. The Californian mashed the gas to build speed as he took the green to start his first lap. He navigated around the first set of turns before making quick work of the last set. Carson completed his first and only lap in 12.693 seconds. Carson’s only attempt was good enough to finish fifth quick overall when qualifying ended. Turning the quickest lap of the night to earn the Simpson Quick Time Award at Ohsweken Speedway was none other than Sheldon Haudenschild, the 39th career quick time, chauffeuring the NOS Energy Drink #17 showing off his speed with a lap of 12.538 seconds in Flight #1. David Gravel was the quickest driver in Flight #2 with a lap of 12.808 seconds.

It did not take long for the starting lineups to post for the four 8-lap Heat races. By virtue of his best time trial lap, Carson would be in NOS Energy Drink #1 where he would get the Durst Inc./C&R Racing/Walker Performance Filtration #41 Maxim started from the third position. Logan Schuchart in the Shark Racing #1s would pair up in row two with Carson for the start. Quick timer, Sheldon Haudenschild #17 would start from the pole position with Tillsonburg, Ontario’s own Cory Turner #17X to his outside. Ryan Turner #15T and Michael Kofoid #83 were in row three, Davie Franek #28F and Josh Hansen #88H lined up in row four with Eric Gledhill #7 and Kevin Pauls #46 sitting in row five.

The cars were in order down the back straightaway with the polesitter bringing them up to speed out of turn four. Sheldon Haudenschild vaulted into the lead with Carson Macedo using the inside line to drive by Cory Turner for the second spot. The Lemoore, California driver stayed close to the NOS Energy Drink #17 driver when the yellow flag flew for Ryan Turner who spun in turn four while racing for position.

Sheldon chose to restart from the inside lane with Carson Macedo pulling the Albaugh – Your Alternative #41 to the topside if the front row. When the green flag came back out, Carson drove into the top spot with Haudenschild digging hard behind him. The driver at the front of the pack was in clean air and sailing right along at the halfway point of the race.

Carson would lead all the remaining laps to take the win ahead of Sheldon Haudenschild and Logan Schuchart with Michael Kofoid and Cory Turner locking down the last two transfer positions.

Breaking a four-race streak of not qualifying for the Dash, Carson would get the Albaugh #41 entry started from the fifth position in the 6-lap Toyota Dash after the draw. Chris Windom #7s would lead the field from the pole position with Jordan Thomas #79 to his outside. Giovanni Scelzi #18 and David Gravel were side-by-side in row two with Jonathan Preston #22 sharing row three with Carson. Two seventeens were in row four with Bill Balog #17B on the inside starting seventh and Sheldon Haudenschild #17 starting eighth. Jordan Thomas jumped into the lead at the start with Windom hustling behind him. Carson was running in the fifth spot on lap one, but the next time around lost two positions and was now running seventh. On lap 3, he would lose another position. Up front, a determined Jordan Thomas ran a great race as he took the win ahead of David Gravel with Windom, Scelzi, and Balog rounding out the top five. Jonathan Preston raced home sixth with Haudenschild and Macedo completing the finishing order.

The show up until this point was terrific, but the last event of the night is what everyone in attendance spent their hard-earned money to see – the opening night, 30-lap Federated Auto Parts Showdown at Ohsweken feature event. Jordan Thomas #79 and David Gravel #2 earned the front row starting spots by finishing first and second in the Toyota Dash. Chris Windom #7s and Giovanni Scelzi #18 were in row two with Bill Balog #17B and Jonathan Preston #22 in row three.

Carson lined the Tarlton and Son/Pro Powder Coating (PPC)/Xtreme Body and Paint #41 Maxim on the outside of row four pulling up alongside Sheldon Haudenschild in the #17. Poised and ready to get moving when the field was given the signal to go green flag racing, Carson peered through the shield of his Bell Helmet looking for the waving green flag.

Off turn four the drivers mashed the accelerator with Jordan Thomas outdueling Gravel for the lead on the opening lap. Carson was on a mission and was running in sixth place with the first circuit recorded in the book, but he was hungry for more. The next time around he gained the final spot in the top five with a lot of racing remaining.

Jordan Thomas was impressive and led the first eleven laps before surrendering the top spot while navigating the lap traffic to David Gravel who raced by into the lead on the top side of the track. Behind the race leaders Bill Balog was on the move and charging forward. Carson was swapping in and out of the top five for quite a few laps.

After the caution flag flew for debris with twelve laps to go, Carson lined up for the restart from the sixth position. David Gravel gracefully brought them powerful sprint cars back up to speed as Carson got a terrific restart and was battling with Gravel for the lead before taking it.

The two talented racers were racing side-by-side for the first position with ten laps to go with Balog chugging hard behind them. Macedo had the lead and Gravel wanted it back. Gravel got it back on lap 23 after throwing a clean slider for the lead.

The Big Game Motorsports’ driver was out front with Sheldon Haudenschild now on the move in the NOS Energy Drink #17. He was pressuring Macedo for second and claimed it with three laps to go. David Gravel raced to the win by 1.9 seconds ahead of Sheldon Haudenschild with Carson Macedo securing the last step on the podium coming home third. Another good run for Macedo and the forty-one!
