WELCOME TO THE WEST COAST: IN THE WoO RETURN TO THE WEST, CARSON MACEDO CHOPPED HIS WAY TO A TOP 10 FINISH IN THE STOCKTON SHOWDOWN AT THE NEWLY CONFIGURED CALIFORNIA RACE TRACK
STOCKTON, CALIFORNIA (September 6, 2024) – First the first time this season, the World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car teams made the long trek across this beautiful country to visit the West Coast and put on their brand of entertaining shows over the next three weekends. It would all begin at the 3/8-mile semi-banked oval at the Stockton Dirt Track, located about 60 miles south of Sacramento, in the Stockton Showdown. The fans in California love sprint car racing and this would be the series’ first time back at the track since 2019. Stockton has been shrunk and reconfigured since the touring series last visited here. This state has cultivated a lot of home grown, and incredibly successful, sprint car talent. One of those drivers is Carson Macedo who has driven for the Jason Johnson Racing (JJR) #41 sprint car team since 2021. He was born and raised just up the road in the Central Valley in Lemoore, California and has excelled on the national level driving the Albaugh – Your Alternative/Tarlton and Son/Bandy & Associates #41 Maxim. He always loves coming back home to compete in front of his home state fans, friends, and sponsorship partners. There were 35 stout teams who passed through the pit gates as the travelers were joined throughout the pits by the local competitors. It was race day at Stockton Dirt Track on Friday night – World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series style!
The time trial order for the field of competitors was set for Sea Foam Qualifying. Where each of the drivers would go out for their laps was determined by random draw by each team earlier in the evening at the timing and scoring hauler. When scanning the list, Carson would be the 33rd driver to show off his talents on the track in qualifying. Like all the other drivers, he would only have two laps at speed to create the best lap time to represent himself in the build out of the heat race lineups. When Garet Williamson in the Fischer Motorsports #23 completed his attempts, the Kistler Engines power plant under the hood fired in the Complete Parts & Equipment Solutions/Crow Enterprizes/Winters Performance Products forty-one with Carson Macedo ready to get to work. When Carson raced off turn four at speed he saw the green flag waving. He passed by the flagstand and tripped the timing light. The numbers that were measuring his performance started moving by quickly on the stopwatch. At the end of the first lap his work was recorded in 11.508 seconds. He had one more lap to go and was working hard to show improvement. Only time would tell as he hit his marks. Off turn four for the last time the flagman unveiled the checkered flag to end his session with a lap two time of 11.536 seconds. When each driver’s best lap times were ordered from best to worst, Carson’s first lap positioned him sixth overall on the speed list. Californian Shane Golobic driving the Matt Wood Racing/NOS Energy Drink #17W turned the quickest lap of the evening on his way to setting a New Track Record (NTR) with a lap of 11.301 seconds to earn the Simpson Quick Time Award.
The lineups for the four 10-lap heat races were completed and posted at the WoO Command Center. Carson was slated to compete in the second heat race where he would start from the outside of the front row with polesitter David Gravel to his inside. Giovanni Scelzi and Donny Schatz were in the row directly behind Gravel and Macedo with Brock Zearfoss and Cole Macedo in row three. Gauge Garcia and Mariah Ede occupied row four with Dominic Gorden alone in row five.
After Philip, Robby, and Adam completed their work, Carson climbed into his office nestled comfortably into his Fibreworks Composites carbon seat with a Sharp Advantage custom fitted insert. He rolled slowly into the staging lane where he would waited for a push truck to assist him in firing his engine.
The track still was soft with an abundance of moisture in it to go along with a lot of California character as the field paced side-by-side awaiting the green flag. On the initial start, Carson would use the outside lane to jump into the lead as David Gravel bicycled his Big Game Motorsports #2 in the first set of turns. He miraculously saved it, but Donny Schatz used the opportunity to move into second. All of that action was negated though when Gauge Garcia #2K flipped in turn three before a lap could be completed after making contact with Mariah Ede.
They would re-align and try again with a complete restart. But before they could get these speed monsters up to speed the yellow flag was out form Brock Zearfoss in the Moose’s LZ Bar & Grill #3z as he slowed to a stop with damage.
They would try a third time to get this heat race started to no avail as Brock Zearfoss slowed again off turn two. But the red flag came back out because at the other end in turn four Dominic Gorden was upside down.
The field was reset and would attempt to get a lap in on the fourth try. This time polesitter David Gravel drove into the clean air first with Carson tucking the Albaugh – Your Alternative #41 behind in second just ahead of Donny Schatz.
The racers got some laps recorded before the caution flag was back out on lap four for Brock Zearfoss again as he experienced some more issues as he headed to the work area before rejoining the field.
When the remaining field went back to green flag racing, David Gravel hustled into the lead with six laps to go as Carson tried to keep pace. The driver out front was using the clear track to his advantage as he maximized his speed and built his lead. Gravel would not be denied as he raced to the win with Carson coming home second. Donny Schatz raced home third with Giovanni Scelzi and Cole Macedo locking down the final transfer spots out of the second heat race.
Carson’s second place finish made him eligible for the Toyota Dash for the 36th time in World of Outlaws competition this season. A pair of 17’s would be on the front row of the 8-lap Dash with the #17B of Bill Balog on the pole with the #17W of quick timer Shane Golobic on the outside. Justin Sanders #2X and Tanner Carrick #83T, both California drivers, were in row two. Carson Macedo #41 shared row three with David Gravel #2. Row four found Buddy Kofoid #83 and Kaleb Montgomery #3 ready to go. The track crew did some extensive work to make the surface better before the Dash. After a long delay the engines in the racecars fired as they rolled into their starting positions. When the green flag came out Shane Golobic drove into the lead as Carson moved into the fourth spot momentarily. Behind them though Buffy Kofoid was ripping in the Roth Motorsports #83 as he was moving forward – fast. By lap three he had caught up to Carson and moved by into the fourth position. He was not done yet though as he would pick off both Justin Sanders and Bill Balog before the checkered flag flew to take over second place. Shane Golobic kept his strong night on track as he took the win ahead of Kofoid with Balog and Sanders right behind. Carson came home with a fifth place finish in the Durst Inc./Border International/CASM Safety Products #41. David Gravel was scored sixth with Kaleb Montgomery and Tanner Carrick rounding out the finishing order.
The action up to this point of the night was captivating and entertaining all wrapped up into one. But more was in store for the fans as the 24 car field pushed out onto the track for the 25-lap NOS Energy Drink Stockton Showdown feature finale. It was time to get down to business Cali style. Each driver’s performance in this race would determine how much income they were going to generate based on where they finished. There was a $12,000 pay day awaiting the winner, which had everyone focused and driven to succeed.
Californians Shane Golobic and Buddy Kofoid paced the field from the front row with Bill Balog and Justin Sanders right behind them. Carson Macedo would get the Albaugh – Your Alternative/T-FAB Custom Metal Fabrication/Vortex Racing Products #41 started from the fifth spot alongside David Gravel. Row four was filled with Kaleb Montgomery and Tanner Carrick. It was time to go racing at the Stockton Dirt Track!
The green flag waved after the four-wide salute was completed as Shane Golobic blasted into the top spot ahead of Buddy Kofoid. The driver of the #17W had a fast race car and the talent to go with the speed. Justin Sanders was running in third with Bill Balog holding down the fourth spot.
Carson held onto his fifth starting position on the opening lap, but on lap two got shuffled back to eighth on the next circuit when he bicycled up on the right side in turn two. The action was fast and furious as each of the drivers battled the California character that was still in the Stockton Dirt Track.
On lap 3, the red flag came out for Garet Williamson who flipped. Colby Copeland’s #5V ended up parked on top of Williamson’s upside down car as Ryan Bernal and Jock Goodyer were also involved.
After the carnage was cleared, the yellow lights came back on as Shane Golobic lead the field back to the green flag from the point position with Buddy Kofoid, Bill Balog, Justin Sanders, and David Gravel right behind. Carson restarted from the seventh position just behind Kaleb Montgomery. When they got up to speed Macedo was racing for position with twelfth starting Sheldon Haudenschild. The driver of the NOS Energy Drink #17 would steal it away as he raced off towards his next prey.
Up at the front of the pack, as the leaders were navigating through lap traffic, the driver of the Mobil 1/Toyota/Roth Motorsports #83 was tracking down you race leader. He caught him and made his way by Golobic to take command of the lead position. Buddy Kofoid raced to his second win in a row crossing the finish line just ahead of Shane Golobic with Justin Sanders completing the all-California podium. Sheldon Haudenschild ended his impressive run with a fourth place finish as David Gravel rounded out the top five.
Carson secured an eighth place finish in the Albaugh – Your Alternative #41. A good night, not a great night, but the boys were able to roll the car back into the box as they head to Kings Speedway in Hanford on Saturday night for the 5th Annual Tom Tarlton Classic. If you cannot make it out to the track to see all of the action live, be sure to tune into DIRTVision to watch the entertainment unfold.
