DIGGING AT THE DOTY: A GREAT NIGHT OF RACING ACTION AT THE 36TH ANNUAL BRAD DOTY CLASSIC SEES CARSON MACEDO RACE THE ALBAUGH – YOUR ALTERNATIVE #41 TO ANOTHER TOP FIVE FINISH AT ATTICA RACEWAY PARK
ATTICA, OHIO (July 16, 2024) – The month of July is the start of what is affectionately referred to as the “Month of Money” around the national sprint car racing community. On Tuesday night, the Ben Franklin filled month kicked off at Attica Raceway Park with the running of the 36th Annual Ohio Logistics Brad Doty Classic. This race honors the former racing star who was born in Millersburg, Ohio and took his open wheel talents to the biggest stages across the country to cement his name amongst the best in the business before getting hurt at Eldora Speedway back in July 1988 at the Kings Royal. He has continued to be a great ambassador of the sport and was inducted in the National Sprint Car Hall of Fame (NSCHoF) as part of the twelfth class in 2001. With beautiful mid-summer skies overhead and the heat of the sun warming up the environment, the race haulers were pulling through the pit gates as they found their spots throughout the pit area located off turns three and four with the train tracks through town just off in the distance. There were and 46 stout racing teams registered to race at Attica Raceway Park in the Brad Doty Classic – World of Outlaws style!
With greater than 38 cars entered, the field of talent was split into two groups for Sea Foam Qualifying. Time trials are such an important part of the evening’s “success formula” as they can make or break a driver’s night right out of the gate. The goal is simple: Go as fast as you can while keeping it on all four wheel. Carson Macedo would be the seventh driver out in Flight 1 aboard the Albaugh – Your Alternative/Kistler Engines/Greber Racing Components (GRC) #41 Maxim. When Zane DeVault and Tanner Holmes completed their two laps, Carson’s engine fired after a push in the staging lane as he entered the track with #23 Cale Thomas. Without hesitation he enabled his right foot to commence the high speed assault around the 1/3-mile track. After building up his speed, he roared by the flagstand as the seconds began to roll on the stopwatch. Carson rolled around the banking in the first set of turns and down the back straightaway. He wisped though the last set of turns and stopped the clock after his first lap in 13.710 seconds. The Lemoore, California born racer was still busy inside his rolling office. He was looking for anything and everything to allow him to cut some time off the clock. When Carson drove the forty-one by the waving checkered flag his second lap was recorded in 13.373 seconds. The better of his two attempts was second quick overall in Flight 1. The fastest driver in Flight 1 and overall on the night was Giovanni Scelzi in the KCP Racing #18 with a lap of 13.211 seconds. It was Giovanni Scelzi’s fourth quick time of the season earning him the Simpson Quick Time Award.
With a stacked field of talented sprint car drivers there was no easy way into through one of the four 10-lap heat races. If a driver wanted to secure one of the five transfer positions up for grabs in each heat race, they would have to earn it. For each of the heat race winners and runner-ups they would get the added bonus of moving into the Dash. But for now the focus was squarely on qualifying through the heat race. When scanning the starting lineups, the Albaugh – Your Alternative #41 would get rolling from the inside of the front row in Milton Hershey School Heat Race #2 with Logan Schuchart in the Shark Racing #1s to his outside. Behind them would be Zeb Wise and Donny Schatz with Ryan Timms and D.J. Foos in row three. T.J. Michael and Tanner Holmes were in row four with Cale Thomas and Kelby Watt in row five. Landon Brooks tagged the rear of the field.
The green flag was out and the show was on as Carson Macedo and Logan Schuchart were side-by-side through the first set of turns. But the caution flag flew as race officials determined that the driver of the Shark Racing #1s jumped too early on the start so he was docked two spots moving Rudeen #26 of Zeb Wise to the outside of the front row for a complete restart.
The green flag was back out of turn four with the forty-one in the lead. Logan Schuchart worked his way by Wise and regained the runner-up position by the end of the first lap. Carson was working the low side in the first set of turns and moved up to the top side through turns three and four to get around Attica Raceway Park.
Carson would lead from start-to-finish racing across the finish line ahead of Logan Schuchart and Donny Schatz with Zeb Wise and Ryan Timms securing the last two transfer spots.
Carson has a little positivity flowing and it carried over in the pill draw for the 8-lap Toyota Dash as he pulled the ‘1’ pill to start from the pole position with Kyle Larson to his right side. Corey Day and David Gravel were in row two, Buddy Kofoid and Giovanni Scelzi in row three, with Sheldon Haudenschild and Logan Schuchart in row four. It was a star-studded field for sure and was about to get started off turn four. Carson drove into the early race lead with David Gravel racing into the second spot in front of Kyle Larson.
On lap 3, the racing action was slowed when Sheldon Haudenschild spun off turn four leaving Buddy Kofoid nowhere to go as the Roth Motorsports #83 got up over the front end of the NOS Energy Drink #17 and down through the infield. Carson brought the field back up to speed with Gravel right on his tail. Behind them though three California aces were putting on an amazing showcase of speed and talent as Corey Day, Kyle Larson, and Giovanni Scelzi were battling for the show position. Larson came out on top of that skirmish. Carson took the Dash victory ahead of Gravel and Larson with Scelzi, Day, Schuchart, Kofoid, and Haudenschild completing the finishing order.
The starters for the 40-lap, $15,000-to-win 36th Annual Ohio Logistics Brad Doty Classic feature started to make their way out onto the track surface. The crews had completed their work on the cars. Now it was the drivers turn to show off their talents in their sponsor emblazoned paint schemes. Carson Macedo would get his pursuit of victory started from the pole position where he pulled up beside David Gravel in the Huset’s Speedway #2 on the front row. Kyle Larson and Giovani Scelzi paced behind them in row two.
In front of another packed house, the cars spread out into their four-wide salute to the fans who showed up and out at Attica Raceway Park to honor a racing hero – Brad Doty – as the field was paced by the white and silver Coors Light #18 that the race’s namesake drove. The field raced back into their starting positions in their two-by-two formation as the yellow lights dimmed.
Off turn four the green flag was out and the show was on. Carson drove the Mesilla Valley Transportation (MVT)/Sander Engineering/Durst Inc. #41 Maxim into the race lead in front of David Gravel and Kyle Larson. But the yellow flag was out for Sheldon Haudenschild who spun in turn four as he went to the work area and returned.
A complete restart saw Carson Macedo do the same thing as he was the first car through the first set of turns with Gravel and Larson still right there chasing. They were able to get one lap in the books before another yellow flag was thrown for Brandon Spithaler who spun in turn 2.
The top three would get rolling at speed again with Carson in control aboard the Albaugh – Your Alternative #41. Kyle Larson worked his way into second place on lap three as he snuck by Gravel. The high speed action would once again be slowed when Brandon Spithaler and Greg Wilson tangled in turn two.
The restart running order would be Macedo, Larson, Gravel, Day, and Schuchart. They went back racing, but only for one lap before the yellow flag was back out for Kalib Henry who spun in turn one.
Carson would lead them back to the green flag the next time by with Kyle Larson all over him for the lead. Larson dove into turn three low and slid up cleanly across turn four into the race lead on lap 8. Carson turned under him heading down the front straightaway and regaining the lead in turn one.
Carson maintained the lead through lap 15 before David Gravel was back in the picture and passed the JJR #41 on the bottom through turns three and four to take the lead on lap 16. The very next lap around the caution flag was back out, this time for Cole Macedo who had blown a right rear tire on the frontstretch.
David Gravel would lead Macedo, Schuchart, Larson and Schatz back to the waving green flag. Logan Schuchart had a fast racecar and moved by Macedo for the runner-up position. Kyle Larson also moved by Carson and was now running in the third position.
Lap 26, the yellow flag came out for Conner Morrell who slowed on the frontstretch, but the news that unfolded under the yellow flag was a game changer in the race. Logan Schuchart came to a stop on the backstretch before heading to the work area and eventually ending his night. Race official called for an “Open Red” before all of the cars re-fired and were ready to go back racing.
That meant David Gravel would be followed by Kyle Larson, Donny Schatz, and Carson Macedo when the green lights turned back on. No problem for the talented driver from Watertown, Connecticut. David Gravel darted back in to the lead and led the remaining distance to capture his second career Brad Doty Classic. Donny Schatz came home second with Kyle Larson rounding out the podium. Carson Macedo raced hard all night to claim the fourth position with Corey Day rounding out the top five. Another good run for Carson Macedo and the forty-one!
