JUMPING AROUND IN BEAVER DAM: AFTER SETTING QUICK TIME TO START THE NIGHT AT BEAVER DAM RACEWAY, MACEDO CLOSES IT OUT WITH ANOTHER TOP FIVE RUN AT THE 14TH ANNUAL JIM “JB” BOYD MEMORIAL
BEAVER DAM, WISCONSIN (July 10, 2024) – With the explosions and colorful illumination of fireworks used to celebrate the United States’ independence behind them, after the planned short break in the World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series schedule, Philip Dietz along with Carson Macedo, Robby McQuinn, and Adam Zimmerman were back and ready to roll in Wisconsin. They made the trek back to this great state on Wednesday night to run the final night of the 14th Annual Jim “JB” Boyd Memorial at Beaver Dam Raceway. The Saturday night portion of this show was race was originally scheduled to be held back on June 1st, but rain washed it out and postponed the race to this evening. The sun was shining and it was a beautiful summer day for racing. A quick stroll through the pit area revealed 32 teams had shown up to compete for the $20,000 winner’s share of the purse at the 1/3-mile dirt track. The fans also came back out in full force as they were buying their favorite driver’s merchandise to show their support as they made their way to their seats. It was again race day in the state of Wisconsin – World of Outlaws style!
Each of the drivers would get to jump on the gas in Sea Foam Qualifying. They would only get two laps at speed in time trials, so they had to make the most of it when they were out there. The order for qualifying was set by random draw, which positioned the Scott Boyd Family/Pro Powder Coating (PPC)/Mr. Jim’s Racing #41 Maxim as the 26th car out on the track. Carson Macedo snapped his JOES Racing Products Matador Steering Wheel into place and was ready to accelerate and test his skills against the clock. With one tap on his rear nerf bar, the Kistler Engines fired and power up in his car. He began building up his speed and momentum as the California speed chauffeur headed towards the waving green flag. Carson blew by it and turned left through the first set of turns before quickly racing down the back straightaway into the last left hand turns at the other end of the speedway. Just like that, in only 11.636 seconds, he completed his first lap and quickly jumped up to third on the speed charts. Carson stayed on the gas and was relentlessly digging for more speed in less time. But only time would tell how he did on this time around. When he crossed the finish line in the Albaugh – Your Alternative #41 to end his time trial session, the numbers on the scoreboard popped up 11.566 seconds. The faster of his two laps ended the night quick time overall. For their effort, Carson and the JJR #41 team earned their eighth Simpson Quick Time Award of the 2024 season so far.
Using each of the driver’s fastest lap in time trials, World of Outlaws officials posted the starting lineups for each of the four 10-lap heat races. Carson Macedo, driving the Albaugh – Your Alternative/KSE Racing Products/Sam I Am #41 Maxim, would start on the inside of the front row sharing the space with fellow Californian Giovanni Scelzi. Behind them in row two were Kelby Watt and James McFadden. Scotty Theil and Bill Balog made up row three, with Cale Thomas and Preston Ruh arranged side-by-side in fourth row.
The cars were lined up as the field of talented racers slowly paced around prior to the start. The leaders made their way through turn three and when they arrived in turn four they pedaled down to power their way down the front chute and into turn one with Carson in the lead. But Giovanni Scelzi raced off of turn two and ducked underneath the forty-one to move into the top spot as they completed lap one.
Carson did not give up his pursuit of the leader as he got back into a rhythm. After tussling it out for ten laps, Giovanni Scelzi led wire-to-wire to capture the race victory. The driver of the KCP Racing #18 was followed under the checkered flag by Carson Macedo in the Albaugh – Your Alternative #41. James McFadden hustled home third in the Roth Motorsports #83SR followed by Bill Balog Anderson’s Maple Syrup #17B in fourth, with Kelby Watt driving Bill Rose’s #6 securing the fifth and final transfer spot out of the first heat race. Giovanni Scelzi and Carson Macedo locked themselves into the Toyota Dash with the remaining finishers in the top five all transferring to the feature.
Making his way into the 8-lap Toyota Dash, Carson headed to victory lane to draw for his starting position while his JJR #41 team was finishing up putting a fresh Kistler Engines bullet between the frame rails of the Albaugh – Your Alternative #41. When it was his turn to test his luck, he pulled the ‘5’ pill – Jaxx Johnson’s favorite number. Buddy Kofoid and David Gravel would start on the front row with Garet Williamson and Emerson Axsom right behind in row two. To Carson’s right side in row three was Giovanni Scelzi. Row four starters were Sheldon Haudenschild and Donny Schatz. A strong field for sure. The starting grid was following the Toyota TRD PRO pace truck before it pulled into the infield. Off turn four it was Buddy Kofoid racing into the lead as Emerson Axsom snuck under David Gravel entering turn one to take over the second position. The driver of the Roth Motorsports #83 held that spot to lead the first lap around Beaver Dam with Carson moving by Garet Williamson to regain the fifth spot. They were all racing for their starting spots in the feature. Buddy Kofoid was never challenged though as he took the win by 1.757 seconds ahead of Axsom. David Gravel secured third ahead of Giovanni Scelzi. Carson finished fifth as he raced across the finish line in front of Williamson, Schatz, and Haudenschild.
At the University of Wisconsin, down in Madison, where they made the 1990’s hit by House of Pain “Jump Around” one of the great traditions in college football to rock the house at home football games. It was time for those fans in attendance at Beaver Dam Raceway to do their version of “Jump Around” before the 40-lap, $20,000-to-win 14th Annual Jim “JB” Boyd Memorial feature finale as the cars sat silently on the track. It was time to put it down at Beaver Dam Raceway – World of Outlaws style!
After going four-wide to say “thank you” to the awesome fans, the field of drivers blasted back into their starting spots. Side-by-side in twelve rows of two they roared off turn four. At the end of one lap Buddy Kofoid in the Roth Motorsports/ Mobil 1 #83 was your leader with Emerson Axsom chasing the leader like a hungry dog hounding a fleeting rabbit running for his dear life.
Carson was running sixth in the Albaugh – Your Alternative #41 as he was working the low side of the track looking to take advantage of any openings to advance his position on the scoreboard.
On lap 3, Axsom drove back by Kofoid as he slid under him off turn two into the lead. Carson was now in a heated battle for the fifth spot with Garet Williamson. They were racing hard with Williamson fending off the driver of the forty-one lap after lap.
The yellow lights were turned on for the first time with nine laps in the books when Scotty Thiel and Brock Zearfoss sat sideways in turns three and four respectively. The running order when the field would go back to green flag racing was Axsom, Kofoid, Scelzi, Gravel, and Williamson with Carson pacing in the sixth spot.
When the green lights came back on Axsom jumped back into the lead, but the high speed action came to an abrupt halt when Logan McCandless and Christopher Thram flipped before a lap could be scored. They would restart again in the same order, but this time they would come back up to speed in single file formation.
Emerson Axsom would lead Kofoid and Scelzi when they got back up to speed with Carson wheeling his Maxim Racing machine into the last spot in the top five right behind fourth running David Gravel. He was being chased by Sheldon Haudenschild who was on the move.
On lap 12, the driver of the NOS Energy Drink #17 moved by Macedo. Three laps later, Giovanni Scelzi was also moving forward as he took the lead from Axsom with Kofoid, Gravel, and Haudenschild still racing hard behind them.
Carson was carry his speed and momentum forward and at the halfway point of the race he was starting to close the gap between himself and Sheldon Haudenschild. He dove low entering turn three and when he exited turn four Carson maneuvered his way back into the top five.
Giovanni Scelzi was in control out front, but after Buddy Kofoid got by Axsom to claim the runner-up spot he started to close in quickly while the leader was navigating lap traffic. Just behind them, Carson was closing in on David Gravel for the fourth spot too. On lap 27, he moved the Albaugh – Your Alternative #41 by the Big Game Motorsports #2 to claim that position.
With 10 laps to go, it was Giovanni Scelzi, Buddy Kofoid, Emerson Axsom, Carson Macedo and Logan Schuchart now occupying the top five positions in the running order.
That positional arrangement would not change the remainder of the distance with Scelzi collecting his third World of Outlaws win of the season racing across the finish line ahead of Kofoid and Axsom. Carson brought home another top five finish, his 25th of the season, as he finished fourth with Logan Schuchart rounding out the top five. Another good run for Carson Macedo and the forty-one!
