SHOW ME STATE SCRAMBLE: THE WORLD OF OUTLAWS STARS PUT ON AN IMPRESSIVE SHOW AT US 36 RACEWAY AGAIN AS CARSON MACEDO CLAWS HIS WAY TO A 7TH PLACE FINISH IN THE WILDCAT SHOWDOWN
OSBORN, MISSOURI (April 5, 2024) – After traveling to compete out-of-state quite a bit since the season began back in early February, Philip Dietz and the JJR #41 team would stay in their home state of Missouri on Friday night to compete in the Wildcat Showdown at US 36 Raceway (@US36Raceway on the X platform). US 36 Raceway is a lightning fast 3/8-mile, high-banked bullring that is located north of Kansas City. It is known to put on some instant classics like last year’s exciting three car battle for the lead between Carson Macedo, Sheldon Haudenschild and Brad Sweet. With the weather finally cooperating 41 race haulers made their way into the pit area and unloaded to prepare for an entertaining night of sprint car racing World of Outlaws (WoO) style in the Show Me State of Missouri!
On this beautiful Midwest evening, the field of drivers began lining up in the staging area to head out for Sea Foam Qualifying in the correct order. Based on the size of the field there would be two groups for qualifying. The JJR crew pushed the Albaugh – Your Alternative #41 into line as Carson Macedo finalized his speed strategy for time trials. Two laps. One driver. 900+ horsepower. It was time to make speed at US 36 Raceway! Carson would be the 10th driver to push off in Flight B. When the Kistler Engines power plant came alive, Carson pounded the loud pedal and set sail in the forty-one. He was on the move when he raced under the waving green flag into the first set of turns. He exited turn two and carried his speed down the back straightaway looking to excel through the last set of turns. He screamed past the waving white flag as his first lap was recorded in 10.894 seconds, which shot him to the top of the speed charts. His high speed work was not done as he had another lap to try to better his mark. This time when he exited turn four the flagman dropped the black and white checkered flag to end his session. The numbers on the scoreboard for lap two were better as they read 10.866 seconds. When time trials concluded, the faster of Carson’s two laps was second quick overall in Flight B behind Tyler Courtney’s lap of 10.783 seconds. Buddy Kofoid, driving the Roth Motorsports Mobil 1 #83, was the quickest driver of the night out of Flight A by a mere .001 seconds with a lap of 10.782 seconds to earn the Simpson Quick Time Award.
Using their best laps, the drivers were assigned to their starting position in one of the four 8-lap heat races where only the top five finishers advance to the feature. When scanning the lineups, the Albaugh – Your Alternative/Xtreme Body and Paint/Vortex Racing Products #41 Maxim of Carson Macedo would get rolling from the pole position in the fourth heat race. He would pace beside alongside fellow Californian, Rico Abreu, on the front row with Logan Schuchart and Zeb Wise directly behind. Jake Bubak and Jace Park made up row three with Zach Daum and Ayrton Gennetten in row four as Bill Rose and Jack Potter filled the final row.
The shields were down on the drivers helmets as the World of Outlaws Toyota pace truck pulled into the infield. When they arrived at the chalk stripe in turn four it was game on as the engines roared to life. Rico Abreu drove the Rothwell Hyde Vineyards #24 off the outside lane and into the lead as they passed the flagstand. Carson Macedo was directly behind Abreu looking for an opportunity to take the top spot away. While the driver of the Rico Abreu Racing (RAR) #24 was building his lead, Jake Bubak was fighting for the final transfer spot with Jace Park. Meanwhile Carson was beginning to contend with Logan Schuchart in a battle to maintain the second running position. The Shark Racing #1s was closing and was right there in the final laps. Rico Abreu would go onto capture the victory with Carson Macedo hustling the Albaugh – Your Alternative #41 across the line second. Logan Schuchart came home in third place, with Zeb Wise securing fourth, and Jace Park fending off Jake Bubak to collect the fifth and final transfer position out of the fourth heat race.
The top two finishers in each of the heat races locked themselves into the 6-lap Toyota Dash. The starting lineup was set by the luck of the draw with Sheldon Haudenschild, winner of the last two races here, sitting on the pole with James McFadden to his outside in the Roth Motorsports #83SR. Tyler Courtney and David Gravel made up row two with Buddy Kofoid and Donny Schatz in row three. It was an all-California row four with Rico Abreu pulling to the inside of Carson Macedo’s Tarlton and Son/FK Shocks/Durst Inc. #41 Maxim.
When the initial green flag waved it was immediately called off as outside front row starter, James McFadden, was called for jumping the start by race officials. That would make it an all NOS Energy Drink front row as Tyler Courtney moved up beside Sheldon Haudenschild on the front row for the next start attempt. He took advantage of that opportunity and when the green lights came back on he drove the #7BC into the lead with Haudenschild following. Carson dropped his right foot also when the green flag was waved as he picked up two spots and was running in sixth place after the first lap. NOS Energy Drink powered Courtney for all six laps as he secured the win to earn the pole position in the feature with Sheldon Haudenschild coming home second. David Gravel crossed the line in third followed by Roth Motorsports teammates James McFadden and Buddy Kofoid. Carson Macedo brought the Albaugh – Your Alternative #41 home sixth with Donny Schatz and Rico Abreu rounding out the finishing order.
The starting lineup was now set for the 35-lap NOS Energy Drink Wildcat Showdown feature event at US 36 Raceway. The action to this point of the night certainly did not disappoint for the fans who were packed in the stands. The race crews completed their last minute adjustments on their cars. The fans were excited to see the show. And, the drivers were ready to deliver. There was a $12,000 pay day for the driver in victory lane along with a trophy, but only one competitor would earn the winner’s share of the purse. It was time to go racing in Missouri at US 36 Raceway!
The field lined up and was set to go. As the stout group of talented athletes came off of turn four the green flag was out waving as the front row starters, Tyler Courtney and Sheldon Haudenschild, battled to be the first car to turn one. It was Courtney getting there first leading Haudenschild off turn two. Carson got a great start and used the outside lane to drive the Complete Parts & Equipment Solutions/Scott Boyd Family/Ben Cook Race Car Products #41 into fourth. But it was all negated when the red flag came out as Zeb Wise flipped after a multi-car melee on the front stretch before a full lap could be completed. Wise was ok, but his night was over as there was too much damage to repair.
It would be a complete restart and this time when the green flag came out it was Sheldon Haudenschild driving his NOS Energy Drink #17 into the lead ahead of Tyler Courtney to lead the opening lap. Carson was able to gain a spot during the first circuit and was running in the fifth spot behind David Gravel.
They recorded three laps before the next race interruption occurred when Kraig Kinser #70 spun and was sitting backwards in turn one. Race leader Sheldon Haudenschild would choose the outside lane for the restart and use that to maintain the lead over Tyler Courtney when they got back to racing. Carson Macedo was involved in a high speed chess match with Buddy Kofoid over the next few laps to see who would own the fifth spot on the scoreboard. One lap it was Macedo in the Albaugh – Your Alternative #41. The next lap it was Kofoid in the Roth Motorsports #83. What a race between these two racers for track position.
There were races like that all throughout the field here at US 36 Raceway. The drivers at the front of the pack were not only trying to stay ahead of their competition as the laps were counting down, they were also maneuvering through slower traffic at speed. This is exactly what makes them professionals. May looks easy, but it is not.
On lap 20, race leader Sheldon Haudenschild was entering turn one making contact and tangling with a third NOS Energy Drink car, Chris Windom #55, sending the leader spinning. David Gravel who was meticulously moving forward inherited the lead with Donny Schatz in second followed by Tyler Courtney, James McFadden, and Buddy Kofoid.
David Gravel led the field back up to speed in his Big Game Motorsports #2 with Donny Schatz’s Ford Performance #15 right behind. Carson Macedo restarted sixth but was now in a three car battle for position with Buddy Kofoid and Rico Abreu. It was California chaos between the three Golden State natives. On lap 23, Macedo and Abreu made contact racing and coming off turn two sending Abreu spinning as Macedo got up in the air with all four tires off the ground. The forty-one landed safely back on the track surface and Carson maintained his direction and speed to hold the position as the yellow came out. That colored flag was soon replaced by a red one as officials used this as an opportunity to call an “Open Red” to allow teams to refuel for the remainder of the race.
Philip, Robbie, and Adam would go to work as Carson would restart from the fifth position behind Gravel, Schatz, Courtney and McFadden. The engines re-fired and when they roared again it was David Gravel holding onto the first position with Schatz still pursuing the racer from Connecticut. Carson was embroiled in another three car battle for position involving Tyler Courtney and James McFadden. It was another high speed show that was fun to watch.
On lap 31, the red flag was back out for Ryan Timms who flipped after getting up over the cushion entering turn one and collecting Bill Balog whose tough night continued after he flipped on the last lap of his heat race, in the last set of turns, while running second.
The flagman unfurled the green flag one last time with four laps to go. David Gravel was moving out front with Donny Schatz in constant tracking mode. Carson got shuffled back a few spots on the restart but continued to battle. David Gravel collected the win, the first driver this season to repeat as a winner in World of Outlaws competition after there were nine different winners in nine races. Donny Schatz came home second with Buddy Kofoid rounding out the podium spots. James McFadden came home fourth followed by Tyler Courtney in the top five. Carson Macedo hustled all night and raced hard to secure a seventh place finish at US 36 Raceway.
