MOVING IN MECHANICSBURG: MACEDO MASHES THE GAS AND SETS QUICK TIME ON THE OPENING NIGHT OF THE SUMMER NATIONALS AND THEN PARLAYS IT INTO ANOTHER TOP FIVE FINISH IN THE TARLTON AND SON #41 MAXIM
MECHANICSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA (July 21, 2023) – The World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series mid-summer tour though the Keystone State of Pennsylvania continued on Friday night at Williams Grove Speedway with the first night of the Champion Racing Oil Summer Nationals on tap. The unique paper-clipped shape historic half-mile oval provides a delicate balance for the drivers between building the necessary speed down the long straightaways and the technical aspect of the navigating through two very different shaped turns with varying degrees of banking and radiuses at each end of the track. It is a challenge the local racers, affectionately referred to as the Pennsylvania Posse, have the opportunity to practice and refine their skills every Friday night. But, the traveling tour of stars with the World of Outlaws have to recalibrate each time they return to tricky track called “The Grove.” After finishing in fourth place on Thursday night in the World of Outlaws (WoO) return to BAPS Motor Speedway in the Bricker’s Bash event, Carson Macedo along with the JJR #41 team made up of Philip Dietz, Clyde Knipp and Nathan Repetz were looking to keep their mojo rolling under the iconic blue backstretch bridge at Williams Grove. Both of the pit areas on the frontstretch and backstretch play host to 37 talented and competitive teams that unloaded their race equipment ready to roll for some Friday night fireworks.
With less than 38 entries for the opening night of action, the entire field of racers were grouped together for Low-E Insulation Qualifying. Each driver would get two laps around the speed venue that opened back in 1939 hoping to record the lowest lap time possible on the stopwatch. It would be two cars qualifying at a time with Carson designated to be the sixth driver along with Aaron Bollinger. When they got the signal, both drivers sequentially pushed onto the track and into turn one. Carson got his Kistler Engines power plant cranked up as he headed down the backstretch en route to the flagstand to take the green. He arrived with speed and the numbers on the stopwatch started to roll by quickly as he began lap one. He hustled through the first set of turns and blasted down the backstretch with a purpose into turn three. Before he knew it he already saw the white flag waving as he completed the first circuit in impressive fashion at 17.056 seconds. Carson kept the Border International/RaceDiecast.com/Saldana Racing Products #41 pointed in the right direction trying to hit each of his marks with perfection. This time when he exited turn four the black and white checked cloth was waving. Carson raced under it this time stopping the clock at 17.109 seconds. The better of his two attempts positioned him at the top pf the speed charts, but there were a lot of cars left to go. After waiting it out, Carson remained the fastest driver overall on the night with his lap in 17.056 seconds to earn his series leading 12th Simpson Quick Time Award of the season.
With all time trial qualifying completed, World of Outlaws officials used each driver’s best time to set the lineups for the four 8-lap heat races where the top five finishers would transfer into the feature. The heat race winners and runner-up finishers would earned the added bonus of competing in the Toyota Dash where the finishing order sets up their starting spots in the first four rows of the feature, which is important related to track position.
Carson’s best qualifying lap in time trials positioned the Albaugh – Your Alternative/Buckwalter Trucking/Team Jack Foundation #41 Maxim on the pole position beside Brad Sweet when they aligned in side-by-side formation. The duo would pace ahead of Troy Wagaman Jr and Devon Borden in row two with Donny Schatz, Bill Rose, Kasey Kahne, Aaron Bollinger, Lucas Wolfe and Robbie Price.
The racer from Lemoore, California was ready to go and when they hit the chalk stripe laid across turn four he lowered the power pedal and the field of speed demons were off to the races. Carson led the drag race down the frontstretch with Brad Sweet and Devon Borden close behind with Donny Schatz driving in the fourth position. When lap one was in the books, it was that trio of drivers followed by Schatz and Wagaman Jr. running in the transfer positions with 7 more laps to go.
The speedsters started to spread out with each completed lap, Carson had the Albaugh – Your Alternative #41 racing under the checked flag first followed by Brad Sweet across the finish line. The final three transfer position in the heat race went to Devon Borden, Donny Schatz and Troy Wagaman, Jr. to complete the top five.
The drivers who made it into the 6-lap Toyota Dash headed to the frontstretch to redraw for their dash starting spots. By the luck of the draw Logan Schuchart and Brad Sweet would start from the front row with Cory Eliason and Carson Macedo in row two. Sheldon Haudenschild and Rico Abreu paced slowly from row three with Giovanni Scelzi and Brent Marks ready to go in row four.
The green lights went on Brad Sweet oved the NAPA Auto Parts #49 into the lead followed by Logan Schuchart. Carson wheeled the Border International/All Pro Aluminum Cylinder Heads/Brown & Miller Racing Solutions (BMRS) #41 into the third position. Rico Abreu had his #24 rocking and rolling as he raced into the fourth spot. Carson began searching lines to see if he could find some more grip with Sweet still leading Schuchart ahead of him.
Brad Sweet raced to the dash victory over Logan Schuchart and Carson Macedo with Rico Abreu, Cory Eliason, Brent Marks, Sheldon Haudenschild and Giovanni Scelzi.
The 24-car field of drivers that locked themselves into the feature were contemplating what they needed to do as the track surface had changed quite a bit throughout the night. The drivers were conversing with their crew chiefs and crews to agree on the setup they thought would generate the most consistent speed and traction throughout the race for the Friday night edition of the 25-lap NOS Energy Drink Champion Racing Oil Summer Nationals preliminary feature.
The front row of the A-Main would be made up of Brad Sweet and the local’s favorite Outlaw Logan Schuchart. Carson Macedo would get the Mesilla Valley Transportation (MVT)/Tiger Towing/C&R Racing #41 Maxim started from the third position where he would line up next to Rico Abreu in row two ready to get to work.
There is just something special about seeing the Whiskey Myers four-wide salute to the fans as the cars make their way under the backstretch bridge at Williams Grove with all of the camera flashes going off. The fans get amped up to see their favorite driver race for the win, especially those avid and passionate fans that reside over on Beer Hill that sits just outside the fence in turn three. It was now that time as the Toyota TRD PRO pace truck sped up and pulled off the track in turn three. It was just Brad Sweet and Logan Schuchart slowly pacing the field and when they exited turn four the air was again filled with the sweet sound of these magnificent 410 racing engines at “The Grove.”
It was a drag race down the frontstretch and into turn one with the Grass Valley, California driver, Brad Sweet, leading when the cars exited turn two. What appeared to be controlled chaos was just speed in motion sprint car style under the guidance of the speeding athletes. Brad Sweet led lap one with Logan Schuchart and Rico Abreu tracking close behind in the early stages of the race.
Carson was hustling in the fourth spot and had his Albaugh #41 moving fast with Brent Marks operating from the fifth position. The top five drivers, and most of the remaining field, were carrying their speed around the cushion in single file order. When Brad Sweet raced down the back of the pack it gave the drivers running behind him the opportunity to close the gap.
Sweet maintained control pf the top spot with the laps remaining dwindling. But Logan Schuchart was within striking distance. Meanwhile, Carson was still running in the fourth position with Brent Marks battling to keep his position with the hard charging Sheldon Haudenschild on the move.
Haudenschild moved by Marks to move into the top five and he was not done. He was diving in low into each turn and making it work. With 3 laps to go, he closed the gap on the JJR #41 and on the last lap moved by relegating Carson back to fifth. That was not the only last lap pass. It appeared that Brad Sweet had the race in control, but he had mud in his one wheel causing a vibration, which was learned after the race. That gave Logan Schuchart one last chance coming off turn four and he took advantage of it. He raced by Sweet just before the flagstand to secure the opening night victory at the Champion Racing Oil/Morgan Cup Summer Nationals.
Brad Sweet came home second followed by Rico Abreu and Sheldon Haudenschild. Carson brought the Albaugh – Your Alternative #41 home with a fifth place finish to end the night. It was another good run for Macedo and the forty-one!
