DUELING IN TEXAS OUTLAW NATIONALS: THE CALIFORNIAN SET QUICK TIME IN TIME TRIALS AND WON HIS HEAT RACE BEFORE DRAG RACING AND SECURING ANOTHER TOP TEN FINISH AT DEVIL’S BOWL SPEEDWAY

MESQUITE, TEXAS (April 2, 2022) – Moving into their third state to race this week following their seventh place performance in New Mexico and rain out in Oklahoma, Philip Dietz guided the JJR #41 team back to the birthplace for the World of Outlaws – Devil’s Bowl Speedway – in Mesquite, Texas for the Texas Outlaw Nationals. Hailed as the Southwest’s most famous dirt track, the half-mile track hosted the inaugural World of Outlaws event back on March 18, 1978, with Jimmy Boyd winning in a non-wing sprint car against some of the legends of the sport – Wolfgang, Kinser, Swindell, Ferkel, and Allen. This is a track that Philip has a fondness for and always looks forward to returning for this event. On Saturday night there were 32 race teams situated throughout the pit area, located on the backstretch across from the runway for the airport, for the Texas Outlaw Nationals.

This high-banked 1/2-mile dirt track is a unique D shape and provides high speed entertainment for the fans. The drivers would get to test their courage during their two time trial laps in Slick Woody’s Qualifying. By the luck of the draw, Carson would be the very last driver to roll onto the speedway for his timed laps in the Albaugh – Your Alternative/Jansen Transportation/Schoenfeld Headers #41 Maxim. Brad Sweet sat atop the speed charts at the time with an impressive lap of 13.559 seconds. They were all chasing Jason Johnson record of 13.306 seconds that he laid down back on April 27, 2018. Macedo lowered his right foot and sped towards the waving green flag to start the clock. He maneuvered through the first set of turns and down the backstretch. When he exited turn four with the white flag was waving. The clock recorded his first lap at 13.558 seconds, which moved him into the top spot. But he was not done. With the hammer down he was eating up the real estate quickly around Devil’s Bowl as he worked his way back to the flagstand on lap two. This time the clock read 13.462 seconds cementing his third Slick Woody’s Quick Time Award of the season.

With time trials completed, the heat race lineups were drawn up for each of the four 8-lap heat races and posted in the pit area. The track was heavy and fast, so there would be no time for lollygagging when they racers hit the track for their qualifying races. Carson would get the Tarlton and Son/Buckwalter Trucking/Indy Performance Composites (IPC) #41 entry started from the front row in the first heat race. His speed partner on the starting grid to his outside was Jacob Allen with Shark Racing teammate Logan Schuchart in third, Giovanni Scelzi in fourth as Daryn Pittman, Scotty Thiel, Bill Rose and Scott Bogucki filling in the remainder of the starting grid. When the green lights illuminated, Carson drove off turn four and blasted down the front straightaway into the first set of turn in the lead over Allen. His speed was displayed as he wheel at the front of the pack using his KSE Racing Products. With two laps in the books, the yellow flag was displayed for the #1s of third running Logan Schuchart as he slowed and headed to the pit area. He would not rejoin the field, but when racing resumed it was again Macedo driving in clean air at the front ahead of Allen and Scelzi. With each half mile recorded he would extend his lead. In fact, during the event he laid down a lap of 13.298 seconds, which was better than the current track record. It is important to note that official track records are only recorded for laps from time trials. Never looking back, Carson took the checkers 2.687 seconds ahead of Allen as Scelzi, Pittman and Thiel secured the final transfer positions from the first heat race.

Carson would be the first driver to test his luck on the frontstretch when he put his hand in the oversized NOS Energy Drink can to pull one of the eight pills for his starting position in the 6-lap DIRTVision Fast Pass Dash. With the track still narrow and lightning fast a “good” starting position for each competitor was going to be critical. When he looked at the number on the round pill it was a five, which put him on the inside of row three beside Spencer Bayston in the CJB #5. Brian Brown and Brent Marks would start from the front row with Donny Schatz and James McFadden in row two. Jacob Allen and Brad Sweet would follow from row four. Brown would drive into the lead at the start over Marks and never be challenged. He cruised to the win over Marks and Schatz with McFadden beating Macedo to the finish line to secure fourth. Carson finished fifth in the Liquid Trucking/BR Motorsports/Xtreme Body and Paint #41 Maxim ahead of Allen, Bayston and Sweet.

Chasing after the Ted Johnson Memorial trophy, the 24 drivers who made the field climbed into their sprint cars ready to do battle in the $20,000-to-win 30-lap NOS Energy Drink Texas Outlaw Nationals feature. Philip, Clyde and Nate had the Albaugh #41 ready for their driver. Carson climbed aboard and secured himself into his office aboard the JJR #41. His confidence was brimming and the horses were ready to be released under the hood from his Kistler Racing Engines power plant. The track had not widened out much and was still very fast. Passing would be at a premium, but it was the same for each of the talented racers throughout the field. After saluting the fans in the stands, the stacked field of talent went racing as Brian Brown drove into the lead over Brent Marks and Donny Schatz. Jacob Allen drove in front of Macedo at the drop of the green to take control of the fifth position behind James McFadden. They were setting a torrid pace when two laps into the race the first caution would fly for Scotty Thiel who headed to the work area. When they race resumed it was short lived as another yellow quickly came back out when Parker Price-Miller made contact with the frontstretch wall on the exit of turn four. He, too, headed to the work area and rejoined the field.  The green came back out again and it was Brown to the lead over Marks and Schatz with McFadden, Allen and Macedo racing for position. On lap 4, Marks passed Brown for the lead with Schatz still running in the third position. At these speeds it did not take long for the leaders to catch up to the back of the pack. Marks artfully maneuvered his way through lapped traffic putting some distance between himself and his challengers. Carson was able to use the lap traffic to close in on Allen who had done the same with McFadden. Unfortunately there were just very limited opportunities for passing. Brent Marks went on to collect the victory over Donny Schatz with Brian Brown completing the podium. James McFadden came home fourth with Jacob Allen completing the top five. Carson came home sixth with Brad Sweet seventh, Spencer Bayston eighth, Giovanni Scelzi ninth, and Hunter Schuerenberg rounding out the top ten. Macedo’s sixth place run extended his top ten streak to eight. Another great run for the forty-one! Carson will look to add to that next weekend when the World of Outlaws head to the “Show-Me” State of Missouri for two races next weekend – Friday night at US 36 Raceway and Saturday night at Lake Ozark Speedway for the 4th Annual Jason Johnson Classic!
