HUMBLED AT THE HISTORIC PAPER CLIP: TEAM TRIES EVERYTHING TO FIGURE OUT THE GROVE IN THE MORGAN CUP FINALE AS THEY BATTLE TO SALVAGE A 16TH PLACE FINISH ABOARD THE JONESTOWN KOA #41 MAXIM
MECHANICSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA (May 15, 2021) – After a competitive and very successful night of action for the JJR #41 team on Friday night where Carson led all 25 laps of the feature and held off a hard charging Lance Dewease by 0.361 seconds to collect his first World of Outlaws win at Williams Grove, he did win the non-sanctioned opening day show last year while racing for Kyle Larson Racing (KLR), the crew was back in the pit area with their beautiful Border International truck and hauler ready to roll out the Complete Parts & Equipment Solutions/Vortex Racing Products/Wilwood #41 Maxim for the final night of the Morgan Cup at Williams Grove Speedway. This place is tricky and can change from night to night, so you always have to be on your game. It was a whole new day filled with opportunities with Chamber of Commerce type weather and fans packing the grandstands. With 40 teams lining the frontstretch and backstretch pit areas, it was the team’s goal to avoid and overcome any challenges and convert them into opportunities if they arose at the half-mile that has produced a rich racing history to produce solid outcomes. It was time to go racing again at Williams Grove Speedway!
With another large field of competitors and teams, the teams were separated into two equal groups by the luck of the draw for Slick Woody’s Qualifying. Carson drew the eleven pill, which positioned him as the sixth driver out in Flight A. The objective for the crew chiefs and teams was to give their drivers the best racecar possible to produce speed, handling, and traction against the clock on the evolving track surface. The driver’s goal was to use their knowledge, skills, and abilities to wheel their 900 horsepower machine the quickest way around the paperclip shaped speedway in the least amount of time. Sitting comfortably in his Fibreworks Composite custom fitted seat and Sharp Advantage insert, Macedo strapped in tightly for his high speed adventure at the Grove. With the steering wheel locked in place, he was ready to roll when he pushed off for his two time trial laps. The talented driver from California got the Mesilla Valley Transportation (MVT)/Tarlton and Son #41 up to speed and took the green. With the seconds ticking by he sped through the first set of turns and down the backstretch under the famous blue bridge. When he exited turn four he saw the white flag waving as his first lap posted a time of 18.798 seconds. Full steam ahead he searched to find a little more speed and potentially a few tenths of a second on the stopwatch. His second lap returned a time of 18.544 seconds, which when all the engines silenced was seventh quick overall in Flight A. Giovanni Scelzi set overall quick time for the night for both groups out of Flight A with a fast lap of 17.624 seconds as one of the first few cars out on the track.
Set for the first multi-car competition of the night in the 8-lap Drydene Heat Races, Philip Dietz and the crew worked diligently to get the Tiger Towing/Dissolvalloy Downhole Revolution/C&R Racing hot rod ready for competition. Four miles around the half-mile oval would determine which five drivers earned automatic transfer spots into the feature event from the first of four heat races. Carson would get started from the outside of row two with Pennsylvania native Logan Schuchart manning the inside of the row. Giovanni Scelzi and James McFadden were on the front row as Freddie Rahmer, Kraig Kinser, Steve Buckwalter, Brandon Rahmer, Dylan Norris, and Matt Campbell comprised the remainder of the starting order. When they went racing under green flag conditions it was McFadden to the lead over Scelzi with Schuchart and Macedo having an intense battle for position on the opening lap. The racing was tight as the two almost got together, but the two talented drivers raced cleanly off the turn. An early caution for Kraig Kinser regrouped the field in their two-by-two starting order with McFadden again leading them down the frontstretch ahead of Scelzi and Macedo who used the bottom lane to drive into the show position. Carson immediately started to press Scelzi for second. They now were going at it wheel to wheel. Scelzi had the position, Macedo wanted it. Macedo made a bold move on the entry of turn three the next lap around and checked up out of four to avoid contact. McFadden meanwhile built a sizable lead over Scelzi with Macedo settling into third. McFadden led the remaining laps to take the win over Scelzi, Macedo, and Schuchart with Freddie Rahmer securing the final transfer position.
Missing out on transferring to the DirtVision Fast Pass Dash by one position, Carson and the JJR #41 crew continue to make changes to their car to try to lock it down with the rapidly changing track conditions. After all of the qualifying was completed it was time to go racing in the final leg of the spring edition of the WoO versus PA Posse. With fireworks bursting overhead, the crews up and down pit road were readying their chariots of speed for the 30-lap Morgan Cup feature finale. As the horns blew in the pits, the mechanical preparation part of the sport were wrapping up as the drivers slipped into the cockpit of their racing entries. It was time to see who would race to the win to take ownership of the Morgan Cup for the next year. Carson would get rolling from the fifth row in the ninth starting position aboard the Jonestown KOA/Liquid Trucking/T-FAB Custom Metal Fabrication #41 Maxim beside Friday night’s runner-up Lance Dewease. Aaron Reutzel in the Roth Motorsports #83 and Giovanni Scelzi in the KCP #18 would lead the field to the green in the finale at the Grove. Reutzel wasted very little time sending a message he would be the one to contend with as he darted into the lead at the drop of the green flag. Carson got shuffled back to twelfth on the first lap and lost another spot on lap two. By lap four he was battling with Brent Marks for position. He executed a slider through turn four that stuck momentarily, but Marks turned back under him and returned the favor to reclaim the position on the track. Sheldon Haudenschild was now looking to get by Macedo on the next circuit and was able to race by the forty-one driver. Reutzel was still in command at the front of the field. Macedo was now wrestling for position with David Gravel for position on the track. Over the next six laps they would exchange the track position multiple times. Gravel eventually used the low line through turns one and two to claim the spot. As the laps started to wind down, Reutzel’s lead was shrinking as Scelzi was using the lap cars to his advantage. So was the fast moving Lance Dewease who was now running in third. The track slowed considerably as it started rubbering up making passing very difficult, even when the leaders were trying to get back slower traffic. Reutzel would hang on to take the win over Scelzi and Dewease who rounded out the podium spots. Anthony Macri raced home fourth in his #39M with Kerry Madsen in the TSR #14 rounding out the top five. Carson was able to salvage a sixteenth place finish which was not what the team was hoping for, but they quickly started to learn from it for next time and put it behind as they turned their focus to Tuesday night at Bridgeport Motorsports Park.
