OPENING UP IN THE FLORIDA COLD: CARSON MACEDO CLIMBS ABOARD THE JJR #41 AT VOLUSIA SPEEDWAY PARK TO KICK OFF THE 50TH ANNUAL DIRTCAR NATIONALS AND CROSSES THE FINISH LINE WITH A 7TH PLACE FINISH
BARBERVILLE, FLORIDA (February 3, 2021) – Philip Dietz and the JJR #41 team pulled into the pit area at Volusia Speedway Park ready to unload the Tarlton and Son Inc./Complete Parts & Equipment Solutions #41 Maxim eager and ready to get the 2021 season started with Carson Macedo behind the wheel. With unbridled excitement in the air and 34 sprint car teams unloaded and ready to compete with the All Star Circuit of Champions (ASCoC) as part of their Sugarlands Shine Southern Tour . . . it was time to go racing in the Sunshine State of Florida.
Following the ASCoC format, the large field of competitors would qualifying in four different groups against the other drivers in their heat races. The Lemoore, California hot shoe would be the 26th car out on the track in Group D. He buckled into the cockpit of his Maxim Racing speed machine and prepared to battle against the ticking second hand on the stopwatch. When the Kistler Engines power fired, he powered his way towards the waving green flag and was now on the clock. He turned his first lap around the fast half-mile speed facility in 13.787 seconds. He stayed on the loud pedal and focused on hitting all of his marks the second time around improving his time with a lap of 13.300 seconds. The faster of his two laps positioned him 2nd quick in Group D and 9th overall for the night.
The All Star Circuit of Champion officials went to work to build out the heat race lineups based on the time trial results. Macedo would start from the inside of row two beside fellow Missouri-based team and driver Brian Brown in the Casey General Stores #21. The front row of Kraig Kinser and Logan Schuchart brought the field to the green flag for the Mobil 1 heat race. Macedo drove the Mesilla Valley Transportation (MVT)/Border International #41 into the third position heading into turn one, but was in for an 8 lap battle with Brown as there were two distinctive lines with the top being the faster of the two. Carson slid back into the fourth position and moved to the top of the track against the cushion to get into the faster lane. Kraig Kinser was in command in the clean air at the front of the pack and took the checkers over Schuchart and Brown with Macedo coming home fourth and Kerry Madsen securing the fifth and final transfer position.
Missing out of the making the Dash draw by one position in time trial qualifying and heat race action, Macedo and the JJR #41 team used their time to focus on getting the Liquid Trucking/Jonestown KOA #41 Maxim ready for the 25-lap A-Main event. The horn sounded 15 minutes following the conclusion of the B-Main summoning the 24 cars that made the field to the track. Carson would climb into his office aboard the JJR forty-one and be escorted to the track with a push from their Honda Recon ATV. He would line up on the outside of row eight in the 16th starting position beside Kasey Kahne in the Karavan Trailers #9. After two failed attempts to get the initial start in due to cautions, the third time was a charm with front row starter Brian Brown taking the lead over Sheldon Haudenschild. The top line was still the quickest line and Macedo restarted the race on the inside row after the lineup was shuffled due to the cautions. He was patient and methodical as he moved forward in the running order. Brad Sweet tracked down Brown and took the lead on lap seven with Macedo looking to gain positions on the track. He would move up as far as 11th place in the early going and was battling for more. At the front of the pack Donny Schatz was now on the move making the pass for the lead on Sweet on lap 13. By lap 20, Macedo made his way into the top ten aboard the Waco Metal/Dissolvalloy Downhole Revolution #41 Maxim entry. As the laps waned, 13th place starting Logan Schuchart tracked down your leader and passed Schatz for the lead with 3 laps to go. Macedo continued to march his way forward and when Schuchart took the checkered flag over Schatz, Sweet, David Gravel and Brent Marks, Macedo crossed the finish line with a hard earned 7th place finish! Following the race he commented after his first race back in the JJR #41, “It helps a little bit that we were able to race together in the past.” He continued, “I know I have a really good team behind me with Philip (Dietz), Clyde (Knipp), and Nate (Repetz) and the guys instantly got me comfortable tonight, so happy to come home seventh tonight.” A good opening night of action for Carson Macedo and the JJR #41 team!
