THIRD TIME IS A CHARM AT HAUBSTADT: JASON AND THE #41 TEAM GOT BEHIND THE EIGHT BALL AT TRI-STATE SPEEDWAY, BUT FOUGHT BACK TO EARN AN 18TH PLACE FINISH AT THE DEMANDING QUARTER MILE
HAUBSTADT, INDIANA (May 13, 2018) – The life of the Outlaw. As the grandstands emptied at Eldora Speedway on Saturday night, the teams immediately started to turn their attention to Sunday night’s action at Tri-State Speedway in Southern Indiana. After a 4.5 hour drive to the track, located just north of Evansville, the teams were met with a beautiful day filled with sunshine. This was a welcomed sight after the first two attempts to get this race in on the original date, as well as the initial postponed date, were washed out by Mother Nature. The quarter-mile bullring always makes for some exciting racing and this night would not be any different with 43 teams registered to race on Mother’s Day. The grandstands were over flowing with fans. It was time to go racing at Tri-State Speedway!
The field of competitors were split into two qualifying groups, Flight A and Flight B, with Jason and the JJR #41 team slated to go out eighth in Flight B. When Chase Stockton completed his two laps, the Louisiana hot shoe rolled out onto the track aboard the Mesilla Valley Transportation (MVT)/Factory Kahne Shocks #41 Maxim and stood on the gas. It certainly does not take long to get around Tri-State Speedway and the Ragin’ Cajun completed his first lap in 12.893 seconds. He kept the pedal down on lap two and stopped the clock at 12.955 seconds. The quicker of his two laps was 13th quick in Flight B.
When they posted the heat race lineups, Johnson would start on the inside of row four in the third heat race from the seventh starting position. In a stacked heat race, Kyle Larson would start on the pole with Aaron Reutzel sharing the front row as David Gravel, Brad Sweet, Brent Marks and Kraig Kinser all directly in front of Jason as Chase Stockton, Greg Wilson, Clyde Knipp and Brian Paulus filled out the remainder of the grid. After the big John Deere tractor and push trucks completed the preparation of the racing surface, the 10-lap heat races started to roll onto the track. Pulling into position in his Dissolvalloy Downhole Revolution/Wilwood #41, Jason was ready to attempt to fight his way into a top five transfer spot. The initial green flag waved over the field but it was quickly replaced with the yellow flag when Reutzel jumped at the start. The next time Larson drove hard into turn one to take the lead with Gravel close behind. Jason was in the mix with a group of cars fighting for positions and then ran in seventh at the end as Larson took the win over Gravel, Sweet and Kinser with Marks securing the final transfer position at the finish line.
With four automatic transfer position available to the feature event, everyone was going to be up on their steering wheel in an attempt secure one of those coveted positions. Jason would start from the sixth starting spot in the Brown & Miller Racing Solutions (BMRS)/ISC Racers Tape #41 Maxim. Parker Price Miller, Aaron Reutzel, Joe B. Miller and Jacob Allen comprised the first two rows of the Last Chance Showdown (LCS) for the World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series with Cory Eliason sharing row three with the Ragin’ Cajun. Twelve laps of racing sat between these drivers and the checkered flag. The lights were on and when the green cloth waved overhead, it was Aaron Reutzel to the lead over Price Miller. Jason used the top side to drive into fifth place as Chase Briscoe was battling him for position from the sixth position. They were both chasing Jacob Allen for the fourth and final transfer spot. Then all three passed Joe B. Miller and the race was on between Ragin’ Cajun and Briscoe for the final transfer position. These two professionals were putting on an incredible show before the Ragin’ Cajun secured the position. Reutzel went on to take the win over Price Miller and Allen as Jason drove home fourth to transfer to the feature.
The 40-lap feature was the pinnacle of the evening. Twenty-four of the best sprint car racers in the world were poised and ready to go at Tri-State Speedway’s quarter-mile oval. Jason would line up 24th in the Waco Metal/Winters Performance Products #41 Maxim Racing entry. The green flag waved and they were off. Jason was up on his Max Papis Innovations (MPI) steering wheel maneuvering and searching for opportunities. A few early cautions waved over the speedway drawing the field together. Realigned in the two-by-two starting order always makes restarts exciting for the fans in the stands. Jason moved into the 20th position in the running order by the midway point of the race as Justin Peck, Sheldon Haudenschild and David Gravel led the field at the front of the pack. With 10 to go, on a restart, the race leaders got tangled up ending the night for Haudenschild and Peck after strong runs. Gravel inherited the lead and led the remaining distance as Jason salvaged an 18th place finish.
