MESQUITE, TEXAS (April 14, 2017) – There are several historic tracks that are weaved into the rich legacy of sprint car racing throughout the United States. Near the top of all lists undoubtedly is Devil’s Bowl Speedway, which hosted the first-ever World of Outlaws event back in 1978. Jason has spent considerable time throughout his career honing his skills around this unique and lightning fast half mile facility situated in Mesquite, Texas. There were 29 cars lining the backstretch pit area on the first of two nights of racing action in the Texas Outlaw Nationals and the orange and black that trimmed in forty-one that would carry the Ragin’ Cajun on this night was glistening under the sun-filled skies over Texas.
Jason was scheduled to push off 24 for his two laps in time trials aboard the Waco Metal/Weld Racing #41 Maxim. He knew he had a fast hotrod as he was the quickest car in hot laps and Philip and the crew dialed him in a little more. When the push truck tapped his rear nerf bar his potent Kistler Engine came to life and the Louisiana native powered down on the loud pedal. He got his JJR Marshall Racing entry up to speed and took the green flag. He wisped through turns one and two and sailed down the backstretch carry his speed through turns three and four. When he took the white flag, his first lap clocked in at 13.820 seconds which was second quick overall at the time. He kept the air flowing over his Vortex Wing and ran crisp, clean lines around the fast Devil’s Bowl surface. He charged under the checkered flag and this time he bettered his time with an impressive lap of 13.707 seconds to vault to the top of the time trial qualifying speed charts. He would stay there to earn quick time of the night as he had a bad fast race car.
Earning the right to start on the pole in the first and fastest heat by time trial times, he lined up in the pole position with always formidable Logan Schuchart sharing the front row with him. Wayne Johnson and Donny Schatz were perched in row two with Danny Lasoski, Jacob Allen, Parker Price-Miller, David Gravel, Sheldon Haudenschild and Gary Taylor the starting grid. When the green flag waved, Jason darted off the bottom in the Dissolvalloy Downhole Revolution/Valvoline #41 and into the lead with Schuchart giving chase. He was simply flying in the Priority Aviation entry putting distance between himself and the field each and every lap. When the flagman unfurled the black and white checkered cloth it was the Ragin’ Cajun securing the win over Schuchart, Wayne Johnson, Schatz, and Lasoski with Price-Miller capturing the sixth and final transfer position.
Next up for Jason and the JJR Marshall Racing team was the six lap Craftsman Club Dash event which establishes the starting lineup for the feature event. Starting from the pole in his Fischer Body Shop/CCC #41 Maxim, Jason looked to continue his perfect night. Jason Sides was starting to his right with Christopher Bell and Logan Schuchart in row two and Brad Sweet and Joey Saldana in row three. When the green lights illuminated to start the event, Jason wasted no time seizing the lead and showing the way around Devil’s Bowl. He was in a rocket as he maneuvered around the half mile oval. He would lead every lap and take the win ahead of Sides, Bell, Schuchart and Sweet with Saldana coming home sixth.
The 25-lap feature lineup was set. Philip, Jeff and Jakob were making some minor tweaks to the car to make sure she was ready for the high-speed battle. The horn sounded and the competitors climbed aboard their speed machines to prepare to put on a show for the fans that packed the grandstands. Jason climbed aboard and buckled into his Crow Enterprizes safety equipment as he pulled on his Shell Shock custom painted Bell Racing helmet and Oakley gloves. Securing his MPI steering wheel he headed to the track. After the traditional four-wide salute to the fans, they drivers aligned in their two-by-two starting order for the start of the money event. When the green flag waved, Jason got his Weld Racing wheel rolling with his yellow beadlocks and shot to the bottom of turn one to take the top spot ahead of Jason Sides. They would complete the first lap before the race went under red flag conditions when Travis Rilat flipped hard in turn two. When racing action got back up to full speed, the Kistler Engine ponies were definitely running at full speed under the hood of the Jonestown KOA/FK Rod Ends #41. He was building a nice lead over Sides and started to catch the back of the field. When he entered lapped traffic, Sides closed in and when the two racers entered turn one Sides was just off the Ragin’ Cajun’s right rear. That was the closest anyone would get to him all night as Jason was on a mission in a fast race car. Brad Sweet would get by Sides and in the latter stages of the race was using the bottom to cut into Jason’s lead. When the white flag flew, Jason drove hard through one and two and went through the middle of three and four as Sweet dove love to make it a close finish at the checkers. Jason collected his second World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series win of the 2017 season crossing the line ahead of Sweet, Schuchart and Saldana with Kraig Kinser rounding out the top five.
After climbing out of the car and celebrating with his crew, he put on the winner’s cowboy hat and grabbed his little buddy Jaxx as the climbed atop the tail tank to celebrate together under the falling confetti. This win was special for Jason, Bobbi, Jaxx, Philip, Jeff and Jakob. Texas is home to a lot of special friends and long-time supporters of Jason’s career. But it also was special because it was Jason 250th career racing victory. A huge accomplishment with every one of the wins being precious as you do not know if or when the next one is going to happen. He has been blessed with great success and many victory lane celebrations. After being the fastest car in hot laps, he set quick time, led every lap in the heat race, the Dash and the feature event to cap over a truly perfect night. Jason explained the victory to the fans, “It’s one of those nights you always imagine and you dream of.” He continued, “We set quick time, won a heat, won a dash, won a feature. That is a first for me, so hats off to this crew – Jeff, Jakob and Philip. They’re working their tails off and it’s a lot of fun to drive right now.” He concluded by simply stating, “It feels great to be back in Victory Lane!”
A perfect night for Jason and the JJR Marshall Racing team. A historic night as he logged his 250th career win. A great run for the forty-one!
